A movie tie-in that also teachesNov 25, 2011

"Book Collector"
Your kids have seen the film and are now waiting for the DVD to come out. How can you keep their interest high until then? In a joint venture DreamWorks Animation and Publications International produced this book: "Puss in Boots: Look and Find." It's one in the Look and Find series that promotes visual acuity and story detail.
Similar to the ever-popular "I Spy" books, the Look and Find books focus on movies to present those tiny details that children must search for and find. In this particular book our Marmalade tabby Puss and the sleek black cat (whom I presume is a character in the movie) are depicted on the title page. On the first two pages--I Spy and Look and Find books are always presented in two-page spreads-- Puss and Humpty are shown in their very untidy orphanage. The reader is encouraged to find six kinds of bean dishes out of all those things sitting around everywhere.
The next two pages have the reader search for specific people out of many characters, then in the following pages: hotel-related items, then cat-related items at the cantina, then items in a hoarding couple's house, then plants in a forest, and so on. Each set of pictures shows more and more details and items, making the search more complicated and challenging--and fun!
Although most of the settings are in dark areas, the colors are still rich and vibrant, the illustrations fun and challenging. This is the kind of book to stimulate visual growth, as well as item identification and expanse of a common knowledge base. Yes, children's books can be educational like that!
The last two pages provide another set of items that requires the child to search through all the pages a second time. I bought this book to place in my school library because my students love these books! Your child will, too!
As for the story line, you must know that the film "Puss in Boots" has taken a long detour from the original story, but that's what I like about today's literature. Hooray for the old, yet let's welcome the new!
